A low-key man now holds a very high-profile position.
Robert Reid was appointed as the new mayor of Head, Clara and Maria (HCM) last week during a special council meeting.
Reid’s appointment came following the abrupt resignation of Jim Gibson as the head of municipal council earlier this month.
Both Gibson and former councillor Debbi Grills submitted their resignations on the same day, July 13.
Close to 30 people attended last week’s special meeting at the municipal hall in Stonecliffe to see how the three remaining members of council (Councillor Reid, Calvin Chartrand and David Foote) would deal with the departures.
They had several options on the table, including appointing a mayor from amongst themselves.
Another option, laid out in a report by municipal clerk Melinda Reith, was to appoint two council members from amongst HCM’s eligible electors, or to appoint from the voters’ list a mayor and a council member.
Alternatively, council could have directed the clerk to hold a by-election for the two vacant seats.
In terms of choosing a new mayor, Reith pointed out in her report that “historically, in Head, Clara and Maria, when a head of council has stepped down, the remaining members have chosen amongst themselves an individual to step up to that seat.”
