The Laurentian Hills Fire Department responded to a garage fire on New Year’s Eve.
Firefighters were called out at around 4:30 pm December 31 to a property located off Highway 17, east of Chalk River.
The homeowner was alerted by a passerby that the garage on the property was on fire, and a Winnebago, parked beside the structure, was able to be safely moved out of harm’s way, allowing access to the flames by fire fighters.
A pumper and two tankers from Laurentian Hills were dispatched to the scene, along with a tanker from the fire department at Canadian Nuclear Laboratories.
The equipment was able to hook up to fire hydrants, so firefighters had plenty of water with which to battle the blaze, according to Laurentian Hills Fire Chief Kevin Waito.
Although the garage was totally destroyed in the fire, the house on the property, fortunately, didn’t sustain damage, and its residents were able to spend New Year’s Eve in the comfort of their home.
Firefighters remained on scene for approximately four hours.
